The Secret: Moving Heat, Not Making It

Conventional electric heaters generate heat by converting electricity directly into warmth. This process is simple, but the efficiency is capped – you’ll only ever get 1 kW of heat for every 1 kW of electricity used.

Air conditioning systems work differently. Instead of generating heat, they transfer heat from one place to another using the refrigeration cycle:

  1. Compressor – Pressurises the refrigerant, raising its temperature.
  2. Condenser – Releases heat into the indoor space.
  3. Expansion Valve – Drops the refrigerant pressure and temperature.
  4. Evaporator – Absorbs heat from the outside air, even in cold conditions.

Because they’re simply moving heat energy rather than creating it, these systems are vastly more efficient.

🔥 The Coefficient of Performance (COP)

This efficiency is measured by the Coefficient of Performance (COP) – the ratio of heating output to electrical input.

  • A COP of 1 = 1 kW of electricity gives 1 kW of heating (like an electric heater).
  • A COP of 4 = 1 kW of electricity gives 4 kW of heating.

This is why air conditioning units can deliver 3–4 times more heating duty than their power consumption.

🌍 Why It Matters

The benefits of this efficiency are clear:

✅ Lower running costs – Using less electricity for the same (or more) heating output.

✅ Reduced carbon footprint – Particularly when paired with renewable electricity.

✅ Year-round comfort – With the same system providing efficient heating in winter and cooling in summer.

✅ If you are on a renewable electric tariff then your heating and cooling are virtually net zero.

For businesses and organisations, this means you can reduce reliance on traditional heating systems, cut energy bills, and align with sustainability goals.
